Messy reality 1: Perceived effort outweighs perceived benefit
I’m on Twitter, have been for ages, and have lots of friends and followers. The problem is that out of the 30 people I care about most in the world, only 1 is on Twitter. Out of those 30, almost all use personal email everyday, are online, and theoretically could be on Twitter. But I can’t motivate them to try it. The effort seems to outweigh the benefit. Twitter needs to change this to go mainstream. How can Twitter create auto-snippets from people’s day and reduce the perceived effort? Does Twitter have a Marketing Manager?
Messy reality 2: Multiple personas
Many people use Twitter as a work related thing, sharing articles and asking for advice. Other people use it as a micro diary, noting anecdotes from their day. Most people need these worlds to not only co-exist, but be separated, not only by content, but also by persona. People’s work persona is very different to their Friday night drinking persona. Twitter not only needs groups, it needs to support discrete changes to profile depending on audience.
